Russell: On Catholic and Protestant Skeptics

(Originally written September 6, 2005 in Book 2)

The protestant believes a good man is one who opposes authorities and denies received doctrines. The protestant conception of goodness is individualized and isolated.

The Catholic conception of good is more social and tied into the Church.

Protestants like to be good so they create theology to do so. Catholics like to be bad so they invent theology to keep their neighbors good.

If America were made to believe marriage a sin there would no longer be a need for divorce.

A social system should label some harmless acts as sin, therefore people could indulge in wickedness and not harm anyone.
